Holden's Performance
Published in Paperback by Faber & Faber (March, 1990)
Average review score:

Very interesting, but too long.Rampant postmodernism, yet highly unusual, inspiring and deeply intelligent. Murray Bail is weird! He must be! He has taken Australian cultural theory and run away with it. His irreverence towards the whole herd of Australian sacred cows is hilarious and yet written from a well informed historical standpoint. Through humour, he deconstructs the Menzies era and indeed the whole Americanisation of the country from the second World War into the sixtees. Bail also sees the effect that town planning has on its citizens. His description of Canberra is highly informative, downright cynical and yet a real scream. He sees through the sterility of the concentric circles and dead ends of Canberra and associates this strongly with the political mentality of our leaders, who of course, lead us around in circles and up blind alleys! I would recommend this novel to anyone interested in cultural theory, or indeed, anyone interested in an unusually honest and very funny deconstruction of the Menzies era. My only reservation is that the novel is perhaps a little lengthy, given the subject material. Nevertheless, it is well worth a read. John Magee

How to Do Everything with Your eBay(R) Business
Published in Paperback by McGraw-Hill Osborne Media (30 May, 2003)
Average review score:

Better than the Dummies BookI had already purchased the Starting an eBay Business for Dummies book so I was very skeptical about purchasing this book. I decided to just read parts of it in the store. I ended up buying it because I liked the style of his writing, and chapter 4 on tips for serious sellers really hit home. He talks about not getting too wrapped up in each individual sale, that for a serious seller it is important to do a volume of business. He also puts importance on the professional design of your ads, a logo, business cards, etc. to let people know you are a serious professional. I haven't read the book cover to cover but a lot of his information is to the point, with great stories on established eBay sellers and their different approaches. This book is also more up to date than the Dummies book, and talks about PayPal and its pros and cons in detail. Overall, this is a very useful book with great information, and I might not have purchased the Dummies book if this had been out before.

Average review score:

In Search of a Warm RoomThis is an excellent book for anyone wanting to know what life was like during WWII for the everyday ethnic German. Although not widely known, the everyday German suffered at the hands of Nazi Germany. This is a compelling read of suffering and triumph of the human spirit. It is a must read for all students of WWII.

Lizzie Off the Bench
Published in Digital by LTDBooks ()
Average review score:

A NEW FAVORITELIZZIE OFF THE BENCH is one of the best mystery reads this year! Rob Holden writes the story of retired Judge Elizabeth Stanfuss who refuses to quit practicing law just because she's over 65. Lizzie is full of spunk, dry humor, and compassion for her clients (although she'd be reluctant to admit that was the case). This book is sometimes touching, sometimes hilarious, and the characters are a wide ranging bunch. I enjoyed each story thoroughly. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!! BUY THIS BOOK!!
